In order to safely provide work for homeowners as an independent electrical contractor or work for a company that is providing electrical contractor services, the electrician must apply for a license in order to demonstrate the completion of an education program and the knowledge of safe processes that can be used through the electrical contractors.

It is important to meet the requirements when applying for a electrical contractors licence, as applicants that do not meet the requirements will not be approved and will therefore be unable to practice as an electrical contractor.

In order to become a licensed electrical contractor the contractor must first complete a test. The test will include information that should have been learned through the electrical contractor program and include safety regulations and other required information to ensure that the contractor is able to provide safe work to the customer.

Prior to completing the test, the customer must first complete an electrical contractor program to learn about the various electrical systems, installation and other in depth studies that can prepare the electrical contractor for the work that is going to be completed on the job. In addition to the education that is required for an electrical contractor to become certified, the individual must also obtain adequate work experience.

The program often includes a combination of learning and education with on the job experience that can be used as a pre-requisite in order to take the electrical contractors course. This way, the person taking the test to become certified can obtain a well rounded education that includes experience and can therefore be ready to take on the work force through a position with an electrical contracting company or a position that is held through an independent business.

Without a license, the contractor will be unable to find employment with an electrical contracting company unless the student is under an apprenticeship and will be unable to provide homeowners with services as an independent contractor. In addition, the electrical contractor will likely be unable to apply for liability insurance.
